Hollande, Merkel urge Moscow to spur dialogue in Ukraine


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to back talks between Kiev and rebels in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement. In the three-way telephone conversation, Hollande and Merkel "called on all sides in the conflict to cease hostilities and asked the Russian president to promote the resumption of negotiations," the French president's office said. Putin stated only actual ceasefire can be foundation for a constructive dialogue between eastern Ukraine and Kiev. Hollande and Merkel stressed that it is important to ensure Moscow's full control over the Russian-Ukrainian border in order to prevent the infiltration of rebels and smuggling of military equipment, it added.
