Oman's MoH calls for more blood donations during Ramadan

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) To deal with the drop in blood donations during Ramadan and to maintain stock, the department of blood services in the Ministry of Health has called for more help from donors.

Dr Sabria al Hashami, director of department of blood services in Bausher said, ''It is very difficult to predict the demand for blood as it depends on the number of cases hospitals and health services receive.''

''We try our best to maintain a minimum supply. We get nearly 170 donors a day, but this figure is difficult to maintain during Ramadan.'' The ministry is currently running a corporate campaign before Ramadan to augment the blood stock.

Dr Sabria further added, ''We have our annual Ramadan campaign under which we will station our mobile units outside mosques so that people can donate blood after breaking the fast. We also thank all donors for their continued support. This is a precious and invaluable donation and we aim to take all efforts to protect and utilise it.''

She added that the demand for blood usually arises in accident cases and for haematology related surgeries. O positive and A positive groups are the most commonly sought in the country as a significant population lies in these two groups followed by A positive and A negative
