(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Thirteen more sites were inscribed yesterday on the World Heritage List, bringing the total number of listed properties to 1,001.
Botswana's Okavango Delta became the 1,000th site included in the list while Myanmar made its entry with its first site - Pyu Ancient Cities.
Okavango Delta in northwest Botswana comprises permanent marshlands and seasonally flooded plains. It is one of the very few major interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean, with a wetland system that is almost intact.
It is home to some of the world's most endangered species of large mammal, such as the cheetah, white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros, African wild dog and lion.
Myanmar's Pyu Ancient Cities include the remains of three brick-walled and moated cities of Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra in vast irrigated landscapes in the dry zone of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River basin.
They reflect the Pyu kingdoms that flourished for over 1,000 years between 200 BC and 900 AD
The cities are partly excavated archaeological sites.
Remains include palace citadels, burial grounds, early industrial production sites, monumental brick Buddhist stupas, partly standing walls and water management features - some still in use - that underpinned the organised intensive agriculture.
The other newly listed sites include Namhansanseong (Korea); Grand Canal (China); Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor (China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan); Rani-ki-Vav (India); Shahr-i Sokhta (Iran); Decorated Cave of Pont d'Arc (France); Caves of Maresha and Bet Guvrin in the Judean Lowlands as a Microcosm of the Land of the Caves (Israel); Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato (Italy); Bursa and Cumalıkızık: The Birth of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey); Pergamon and its Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape (Turkey) and Monumental earthworks of Poverty Point (the US).
