FAJ meets for first time in Palestine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Federation of Arab Journalists (AFJ) opened its conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Saturday under the chairmanship of the AFJ President Jem Bumelha. The two-day gathering, dubbed "Jerusalem Session," is the first AFJ event held in Palestine. In an address to the opening session on behalf of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Secretary General of the Palestinian Presidency Al-Tayyeb Abdulraheem commended the AFJ role in protecting the press freedoms in the Arab world. "The AFJ provides an umbrella for the Arab efforts to promote the press freedoms in consistency with the aspirations of the Arab peoples, and the principles of democracy, pluralism and human rights," he said. Chairman of the Palestinian journalists' syndicate Abdulnasser Al-Najjar complained that only 36 journalists from eight Arab countries were able to attend the conference as the Israeli authorities denied entry for the rest of invitees. Al-Najjar condemned the malpractices of the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian journalists, urging the Arab and international press organizations to lobby the international public opinion against the Israeli policies. On his part, Bumelha reaffirmed the AFJ support to the Palestinian question and the struggle of the Palestinian journalists to convey truth to the intentional community.
