(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Weqaya, a three-year national campaign to prevent communicable diseases covered about 36,000 expats in the first phase, Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) said yesterday. QRC yesterday held a ceremony at Museum of Islamic Art to mark the conclusion of the first phase launched late in August last year in collaboration with the Supreme Council of Health (SCH). The campaign focus on improving health and safety among expat workers through lectures, fliers and hygiene kits. Addressing the ceremony, QRC Secretary-General Saleh bin Ali Al Mohannadi said about 10,000 workers from 40 companies and 21,000 visitors to health centres attended lectures, interactive sessions, and training for better lifestyle and infection prevention. About 5,000 workers received personal hygiene kits. Dr Mohammed Al Hajri, Director of Health Protection and Communicable Disease Control, SCH, said more programmes will be held on health-related themes, such as psychological health, occupational health and non-communicable diseases. He said preparations are underway for the second phase in partnership with QRC, inviting other players to support the campaign. "For us, QRC partnership is a top priority in light of our fundamental responsibility towards individual and collective health of all segments of society, particularly expat workers and foreign communities. The door is open for all institutions and corporations to join us, as the project is too big to be conducted by one party. It is a project for everyone." Participants watched a presentation on the campaign's activities and accomplishments. Some workers shared experiences with Weqaya health services and how it made a big difference in their lives. Campaign officials, medical workers, volunteers and sponsors were also honoured.
