(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is once again this Ramadan asking the public to consider giving the gift of life and registering as an organ donor as part of a month-long campaign across Qatar.
The campaign will see booths in shopping malls and other prominent locations, staffed trained by Qatar Organ Donation Centre € Hiba - to promote organ donation.
The public will be able to find out more about being a registered donor, what it entails and benefits involved, as well as having their questions about organ transplantation answered.
They will be able to register as donors on the spot and receive donor cards.
An organ transplant can be a life-saving procedure. It can significantly improve the quality of life for someone with chronic organ failure. Life-saving organs come from deceased donors, who pledged during their lives to give organs to someone in need.
A deceased donor can save up to eight lives. It is also possible to donate a kidney or part of the liver while one is alive to one's relative.
Dr Riadh Fadhil, Director of the centre, HMC, said the main objective of the campaign is to increase awareness about organ donation, to increase the number of registered donors and reduce any concerns or misconceptions that people have regarding the process.
"In Doha, we have a team of professionals working in organ donation and transplantation," Dr Fadhil said.
"We have state-of-the-art facilities and provide a safe and compassionate service, in contrast to commercial transplantation abroad that carries high mortality rates and the risk of serious complications.
"Under the Doha Donation Accord, we make sure we look after donors and their families.
"For living donors, we provide health insurance for life and cover any loss of income due to working days missed during the operation and recovery. We also honour our donors for giving this precious gift to someone who badly needed it, with a medal during an annual ceremony.
"A deceased donor's family receive support of our social service department and the government covers hospital expenses, the transfer of the deceased to their countries if they are expats and funeral expenses if they are buried in Qatar.
"We need more donors to register in Qatar so nobody has to face losing a loved one while they are waiting for an organ. Self-sufficiency in organ donation cannot be achieved without community solidarity."
Dr Fadhil and his team have briefed 400 HMC staff, who will be involved in the campaign, on messages that needed to be conveyed to the multi-cultural society.
They will be able to assist the public in their native tongue, in most cases, in making a decision about becoming organ donors.
