(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) As an environmentally pro-active organisation and as part of its year-long environment conservation campaign, Bank Sohar has been providing monthly tips to raise awareness on minimising the wastage of our precious natural resources.

With this goal in mind, the Bank is sharing tips on how you can conserve water when watering your lawn. In a country like Oman where summers can be very hot, efficiently watering your lawn is not an easy task. There are numerous factors to consider but the two most important are when and for how long you need to water your lawn. Not watering your lawn sufficiently is a problem; however overwatering can be even worse contributing to the development of fungus and disease.

Therefore knowing the type of grass used and taking into consideration the environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and wind can dramatically affect how frequently you need to water your lawn. When grass needs water, it will begin to take on a bluegray tint, and the older leafblades on the plant will begin to curl up or wilt. Furthermore, footprints will remain on the grass for longer than usual when walked on.

Another important factor is the depth to which water penetrates the soil. Typically, most grasses require the water to penetrate 8 to 12 inches into the soil. This can be checked by pocking a small hole into the ground after a certain duration of watering and then adjusting accordingly. However, the most crucial aspect, especially in a country like Oman, is the time of day when the lawn is watered. Considering the heat, lawns should optimally be watered in the early hours of morning when the temperature is lower and water evaporation is kept to a minimum.

Sharing her thoughts on the subject, Munira Abdulnabi Macki, DGM human resource and corporate support at Bank Sohar noted, ''While watering the lawn in the early hours of morning, typically between 4am to 9am, is optimal; watering in the evening is also possible and has a similar effect. However, doing so requires careful monitoring. This is because, due to the heat during the day, water in the pipes generally are hotter in the evening than during the morning and because of the high levels of humidity we have during the summer months water may remain stagnant in the soil which can have negative effects on the grass.''

However, these are not the only ways to conserve water. Properly aiming sprinklers, controlling water runoffs and manually watering problem areas by hand also go a long way in conserving this precious resource. Better still, keep an eye on the weather forecast and when rain is near let nature itself do the hard work. Delaying watering by a day or two when rain is near will have next to no adverse effects on the grass.

Furthermore, getting a rain barrel and using the water it collects from your home's rain water runoff to water your garden at a later time. These practices will also go a long way in reducing monthly water expenses. At the beginning of the year, Bank Sohar launched their annual calendar bearing the theme Saving Water, Electricity and Our Planet' which highlights the impact of daily water and electricity consumption on the environment and provides 12 easy to implement tips for energy efficient living.<
