(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt's Foreign Minister has fiercely condemned the "terrorist acts and arbitrary killings" in Iraq, stressing his country's rejection of "barbaric acts that target civilians." The current state of affairs in Iraq foretells serious risks that threaten the unity and stability of this country as well as the entire region, said Nabil Fahmy in a statement.
He went on to underline the need for the Arab world to unanimously reach a position, in coordination with Iraqi authorities and local parties, which safeguards the nation's unity and regional security, and prevents it from divide on sectarian or religious grounds.
Egypt urges all Iraqi factions to resolve their differences amongst themselves, he said, in order to build a strong nation that groups together its entire people.
This will enable Iraq to face extremism and terrorism, through creating a nationalist concept and a political groundwork that disallows sectarian conflict from controlling the destiny of the nation.
He expressed the view that "several Arab nations are facing a fierce attack that aims to divide them according to sectarian, religious or ethnic grounds." Egypt had called for a meeting of Arab foreign ministers, scheduled on Wednesday, to discuss the Iraqi affair and the sectarian conflict currently taking place in eastern parts of the Arab world, during an Arab League Council session a day earlier, he confirmed.
Fahmy, over the past two days, has been in contact with his Arab counterparts in preparation for the talks due at the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, and has thus far spoken with the foreign ministers of Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, along with the Secretary General of the Arab League.
Separately, he expressed his ministry's readiness to repatriate its citizens in Iraq.
