Iran, Nigeria earn goalless draw

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iran and Nigeria drew 0-0 in their opening Group F fixture of the FIFA 2014 World Cup held at Arena da Baixada in the southern city of Curitiba on Monday. A cautious approach was employed by both sides amid the first draw of the tournament, with play kept mostly in the middle of the pitch in the first half. The first half did not witness any real threats from either side, with the exception of a Kenneth Omeruo's shot which landed in the net - only for the goal to be called off after his teammate John Obi Mikel fouled the Iranian keeper. Nigeria came back in the second half to launch a number of offensives, only to be blocked time and time again by a solid Iranian side led by Portuguese manager, Carlos Queiroz. The result leaves both teams in equal second with one point each, after Argentina (three points) earlier beat Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2-1.
