S. Korea Russia Nuclear Envoys to Hold Talks in Moscow


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul june 14 (qna) - south korea's top nuclear envoy hwang joon-kook will leave for moscow on monday for talks with his russian counterpart igor vladimirovich morgulov on ways to resume the six-party talks aimed at ending north korea's nuclear weapons program seoul's foreign ministry said.

"the two sides plan to have extensive discussions on north korea's nuclear problems and issues related to the korean peninsula" the ministry said in a statement. the planned visit marks hwang's first trip to russia since he was appointed as the nuke envoy in early april south korea's news agency (yonhap) reported.

hwang recently held a flurry of meetings with his us counterpart glyn davies and wu dawei china's top nuke envoy in a bid to discuss ways to resume the long-stalled six-party talks.

the six-party forum which includes the two koreas the us china russia and japan has been dormant since late 2008.

hwang told reporters this week in beijing that south korea the united states and china have been seeking "various options" to resume the nuclear talks with north korea.

north korea has threatened to conduct its fourth nuclear test raising tension on the korean peninsula. pyongyang has continued to make provocations by firing two artillery shells in the tensely guarded western sea last month.

since its third nuclear test last year north korea has repeatedly expressed its willingness to return to the long-stalled six-party forum "without preconditions." (qna)
