Jordanian Minister: Imported Energy Bill 17% of GNP


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Man june 13 (qna) - jordanian minister of transport dr. lina shabib said that the bill of imported energy are equal to 17 percent of the gross domestic product (gdp) as it amounted last year to 4.08 billion dinars and is now on the rise.

dr. shabib predicted a bigger rise in energy cost as a result of the continued high demand for energy which creates an economic crisis and imposes considerable pressure on the state's budget and the balance of trade.

shabib who is also acting minster of energy explained that the energy sector has seen over the past years several shocks including the rising energy prices globally and the disruption of egyptian gas and the consequences of the arab spring.

in reports published by jordanian newspapers today dr. shabib said primary estimates indicate high energy demand by 5.5 percent until the year 2020 or approximately 12.5 million tonnes of oil equivalent up to that time an increase of 50 percent from last year.

she expected rise in demand for electricity by 6.4 percent until the year 2020 and 28 gigawatt hours an increase of 75 percent from last year.

the jordanian minister underlined the importance of renewable energy in the total energy mix in the country and work to raise contribution to 10 percent of the energy mix by 2020 as well as raising the efficiency of the sector by 20 percent until the same year.(qna)
