dubai sports world (dsw) flung open its doors to the public in fitting fashion on wednesday as four u19 uae sprinters raced down a makeshift 60m straight at the sound of the starter’s gun.

majid yousef emerged triumphant ahead of his al nasr and uae national team-mates abdullah murad ahmed bilal and walid khalid in a time of 7.34s on concourse one before attention collectively switched inside to the complex itself.

“the wait is finally over and dubai sports world is off to a flying start” said ahmed al khaja senior vice president dwtc.

“with the summer temperature rising dubai sports world is an expansive temperature-controlled indoor venue that caters for a diverse community of sports fans and fitness fanatics.

“people looking for a convenient city-centre facility to stay active — whether by experiencing a world of sporting options or maintaining their seasonal training programmes — can take it inside this summer.”

the emirate’s largest indoor summer sports venue which spans more than 20000 square metres will now run for 11 weeks until august 30th at the dubai world trade centre (dwtc).

spanning shaikh saeed halls one and two and the multi-purpose trade centre arena dsw has courts and pitches for: badminton basketball cricket football rugby tennis and volleyball.

there’s also a bmx and skateboard park a free-to-enter entertainment zone with 12 table tennis tables 600m running track state-of-the-art gym and tiered seating for over 1200 spectators.

dsw then has plenty to offer participants and visitors alike and with a selection of activities offered on a complimentary basis it’s hoped the take-up is again high for the fourth edition of this annual event.

“free-of-charge facilities are an essential component of our dubai sports world proposition” al khaja added.

“our complimentary offerings provide a multitude of opportunities for people from all walks of life to experience the venue and stay active as well as allowing our paying guests a richer choice of options to enjoy both before and after their bookings.”

over the next 10 days as well the venue will host the opening exchanges of the dubai sports world corporate cup — a 32-team football tournament based on the 2014 world cup in brazil; the global launch of kafo academy — a new football training concept run by frederic kanoute a former african footballer of the year and star striker for sevilla tottenham hotspur and west ham and an ambitious charity-driven bid by british boxer david ‘hayemaker’ haye to set a new guinness world record for the world’s largest boxing lesson next saturday (june 21st).

dubai sports world is organised in association with dubai sports council and dubai festivals and retail establishment and supported by the roads and transport authority (rta) and dubai electricity and water authority (dewa).
