(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) expected on Wednesday the Syrian government to release thousands of prisoners, after an amnesty law issued recently by President Bashar Al-Assad.
More than 70,000 prisoners will be released within the next few days, SOHR said, noting that these include the detainees arrested by regime forces prior to June 9.
More than 18,000 are still remain missing in regime jails or unknown locations, it noted.
President Al-Assad issued an amnesty for detainees, which includes those accused of conspiracy, association to terrorist organizations and perpetrating terrorist acts.
The decree also include prisoners accused of smuggling, manufacturing and possessing of weapons, ammunition and explosives.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Free Army appealed friendly countries to support opposition fighters in the province of Deir Al-Zour, during their battles against elements of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), calling it to be regarded as a disaster zone.
