Japan Seeks to Affirm Maritime Ties with Vietnam


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kyo june 11 (qna) - japan's foreign minister fumio kishida says he hopes japan and vietnam can reaffirm cooperation on maritime issues when he visits the country next month.



japanese government officials are arranging a meeting between kishida and vietnamese foreign minister pham binh minh according to japan's (kyodo) news agency.

kishida says he will convey japan's support for vietnam's policy of resolving its territorial dispute with china in the south china sea through dialogue.



vietnam and china are locked in a standoff near the paracel islands which are claimed by both countries. china has unilaterally installed an oil rig in the area and ships from both sides have been involved in confrontations.

kishida says he hopes to confirm that japan and vietnam will work together to maintain maritime order based on the rule of law.

japan has been dealing with an increase in china's maritime activities near the senkaku islands in the east china sea. japan controls the islands; china and taiwan claim them.



kishida says japan will help pay for installing radar systems radios and other equipment on patrol ships operated by vietnam's maritime police.

he plans to travel to vietnam on july 1st after wrapping up a visit to cambodia. (qna)
