(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Universality of human rights can't be accepted as a pretext for accepting ideas and practices that are inconsistent with the religion and tradition, says Kuwait's delegate to the United Nations.

"Kuwait reiterates its rejection of all ideas that are inconsistent with the true Islamic religion and traditions of Kuwait under the pretext of the universality of human rights," Kuwait's Permanent Delegate to the UN and International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim said in a speech at the opening of the 26th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

"Kuwait's stance is similar to that of many countries in this regard." He, however, expressed Kuwait's "full support to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights" and its role in defending human rights across the world.

Al-Ghunaim welcomed the introductory statement made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, especially the concerns she raised about the serious violations and abuses committed by the Israeli authorities against Palestinian people.

"Kuwait shares the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' concerns about the continuation of the illegal Israeli policies of settlement in East Jerusalem and displacement of Palestinians after the demolition of their homes," he said.

He urged the UN Human Rights Council to take serious action to tackle these violations to preserve its credibility as a major defender of human rights in the world.

Ambassador Al-Ghunaim voiced Kuwait's strong condemnation of the indiscriminate military operations and violent acts in Syria that target densely-populated residential areas.

"Kuwait renews its call to all parties to refrain from launching attacks against civilians and to stop indiscriminate use of weapons in populated areas," he said.

He also urged all warring parties in Syria to allow humanitarian aid and relief agencies easy access to the conflict-ravaged areas.

Al-Ghunaim recalled Kuwait's positive appeal to host international conference to tackle the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Kuwait has hosted two international conferences for international donors for Syria aid in the past two years and handed all its aid pledges to humanitarian agencies providing support to the affected people inside Syria and in neighboring countries, he pointed out.

The two conferences raised USD 3.9 billion in aid pledges, including USD 700 million donated by Kuwait.

Al-Ghunaim announced Kuwait's welcome to the visit made recently by the technical team of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the meetings it held with relevant parties to design programs of technical cooperation and capacity building for Bahraini cadres in the field of human rights.

"These steps demonstrate Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Human Rights Council and relevant mechanisms," he concluded.
