Lebanese PM warns of further delay in electing pres.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Lebanese Prime Minister Tamam Sallam Monday warned against the negative consequences caused by failure of the parliament and government to elect a president. "The economic and financial situation in the country is tense and the delay (to elect a president) will make it worse," Sallam said in a speech before graduates of the Mass Communication Faculty. The parliament adjourned earlier today the presidential election session to June 18 due to lack of a quorum today to choose the head of state. The position has been vacant since May 25. House Speaker Nabih Berri announced delaying the session because of failure to convene today's meeting, during which only 64 MPs of the total number of 128 legislators showed up at the parliament hall in downtown Beirut. A quorum requires attendance of 86 lawmakers. Sallam meanwhile said he called for a cabinet meeting next Thursday to discuss how the government would work whilst the president's seat was still vacant.
