(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Qatar Women's Sport Committee (QWSC) yesterday unveiled a new three-year strategic plan to drive women's sport forward in the country and the region.
The strategy seeks to educate girls about the positive impact of sport, increase participation levels of women, improve results in high-performance competitions and build up the country as the regional hub for women's sport development.
"Our new strategy for 2014-2016 sets ambitious goals and has innovative ideas. We will continue to work hard to inspire Qatar's women and girls to make sport a positive and fulfilling part of their lives," said QWSC President Ahlam Salem Al Mana yesterday.
To ensure effective implementation of the strategy, the QWSC will use a scoreboard that is a tailored version of the well-respected business management tool, the Balanced Scorecard.
The committee will focus on spreading awareness about women's sport by tapping its members and partners - pushing to increase national media coverage of women's sport and utilising social media channels.
It will also create more leagues for female athletes to compete in through improved co-operation with the national federations and clubs.
QWSC also aims to increase opportunities for athletes to attend courses at the Qatar Olympic Academy (QOA) to become ambassadors for women in sport.
The committee has its eyes firmly set on creating a stronger Olympic team for Qatar.
"As we look back on 14 years of developing women's sport in Qatar, there is so much to be proud of. Qatari women now regularly compete on the international stage, including the Olympic Games," Al Mana said.
"Our performances improve and our victories increase with every year. Our achievements have been recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). But there is still so much more to do. Our success so far inspires us to aim for even greater achievements," the QWSC President added.
When asked about the results produced by Qatari athletes in different beats since 2000, Al Mana said: "Yes, we are satisfied but we won't stop. We will continue in our mission to get our girls better prepared for Olympic Games and other events. To reach the Games this time was very satisfying but now we will build on this and take the level of girls' involvement to a notch higher."
She added: "When you go back, you would see that we were starting out to build on this dream. After realising our dream, we don't want to stop. We want to get moving and step into next gear. The support of the higher authorities - the Emir, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani - has been very critical in our rise to this level."
