(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The US-Islamic World Forum began here yesterday with call for a constructive partnership between the US and the Islamic world to promote global peace, security and stability.
The Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani graced the opening session of the three-day conference at Ritz-Carlton Doha.
The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani told delegates that US-Islamic world relations shouldn't be confined to common interests, but should strengthen partnership to remove tensions and conflicts for a world of peace, security and stability.
"The world, undoubtedly, is going through a crucial period that requires vigilance to cope with developments and global and regional challenges, particularly those related to peace and security in more than one area in the world." He said there is cooperation on many levels, political and economic, between the Islamic world and the US, pointing out that "this is due to multiple aspects of relations between both sides through which we can contribute together to building the desired world peace."
He reiterated Qatar's call to the UN Security Council to impose a ceasefire in Syria and stop the bloodshed. The crisis posed a real threat to the unity of Syria and the security and stability of the entire region. "The crisis, in its political and humanitarian sides, reveals the inability of the international community in finding a political solution so far, so it is incumbent on the international community, especially the Security Council, to act urgently and declare a decision of ceasefire for the security of the Syrian people and the stability of the entire region."
On the Arab-Israeli peace process, he said it is one of the pillars of strategic relations with the US. The intransigent policies of the Israeli government by continuing the expansion of settlement operations and repeating attempts to attack Al Aqsa Mosque as well as providing partial solutions that are not suitable to achieve the desired peace process have led to the suspension and the failure of peace negotiations in which the US exerted appreciated efforts.
Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita called for supporting efforts being exerted by the international community to build a world characterised with justice, peace and security through constructive dialogue between religions and cultures.
He singled out terrorism as a major threat to world security and called for intensifying efforts of world states and burying their differences to fight the scourge.
Albanian President Bujar Nishani described the annual forum as a noble attempt to build strong bridges of communication and cooperation between the Islamic world and the US.
"We are proud that we live in a society characterised with multiplicity of religions with Islam as the largest religion, whereas followers of religions have been living together in peace and harmony for centuries," he said.
He said the Albanian people have established a model for co-existence and peace and played an important role in promoting harmony and democracy and building a new image of the Balkan region.
He termed his country's relations with the US as "humanitarian, strategic and deeply-rooted."
