S. Korea's Imported Car Sales up 14.2%

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul june 09 (qna) - imported car sales in south korea rose 14.2% on-year in may on steady demand for overseas brands by consumers a local trade association said monday.

the monthly number of 15314 vehicles sold however represents an 8.4% dip from the record high of 16712 a month earlier the korea automobile importers and distributors association (kaida) said.

"the decline compared to april is largely due to less working days and shortfalls in supply that did not meet demand" said yoon dae-sung the association's executive manager.

for the first five months of this year sales of new foreign cars reached 76460 units up a solid 23.9% from last year. the annual car sales of imported brands had hit a record high of 156497 units in 2013 according to south korea's (yonhap) news agency.

german luxury brand bmw ranked no. 1 with volkswagen mercedes-benz audi and ford rounding out the top five.

kaida said 67.1% or 10275 foreign made cars sold in the country were powered by diesel engines with gasoline-driven cars making up just 28.7%. hybrids accounted for 4.2%. (qna)
