Oman signs three pacts with ship classification bodies


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salim al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communication on Sunday signed agreements with Lloyd's Register (LR), Korean Register of Shipping (KR) and the French Bureau Veritas (BV).

According to the pacts, these ship registering bodies have been authorised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to carry out technical surveys of vessels flying the Omani flag and issue certificates as per international requirements.

H E Dr Futaisi said, ''The agreements are related to implementation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolution A739(18) and its amendments and implementation of the clauses of a set of maritime agreements which the sultanate acceded to which stated that the issuance of technical certificates for ships will be done by bodies approved by the international maritime administration.''

H E Dr Futaisi said that the authorisation includes conducting technical survey of ships flying the Omani flag and issuing the safety management certificate, the international ship security certificate (ISSC), the international certificate of pollution prevention for transport of noxious liquid substances (CIPCTSLN), collision prevention course certificate and international loadlines certificate.

Also, the ministry is taking procedures to sign authorisation agreements with other classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Germanischer Lloyd (GL), the Norwegian classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the Italian society Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) and the Japanese society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NK).

These societies are members of the International Association of Classification Club.
