Kuwait cultural movement highlighted at Venice Int'l Architecture Exhibit

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Kuwaiti supervising team for the Kuwaiti pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, held here, said on Sunday that participating in the Venice Biennale gave the Kuwaiti cultural movement a great momentum that helps it in caring for architectural values and highlighting the national identity. This participation has also provided an opportunity to redirect the attention towards some important landmarks in Kuwait's history prior to the discovery of oil and importance of preserving it, Zahra Ali Baba, deputy commissioner-general for the Kuwait Architectural Pavilion Project at the exhibition, told KUNA. This year's exhibition addresses architecture and modernization during the past 100 years, Baba said, adding that the subject closely concerns Kuwait as emergence of modernized architecture has coincided with establishment of modern state, which also fits the national strategy for restoring and revising the list of historical buildings, noted the Kuwaiti participant. The participating Kuwaiti team is showcasing a research on architectural landmarks, which comes within the efforts exerted by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) to preserve the national identity from deterioration and extinction through a new traditional image that is relative to modern architecture, said Baba. She expressed appreciation to the major attention the team has received from Minister of Information, Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, Undersecretary of the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs Sheikha Al-Zain Saud Al-Sabah, and the two ministries' officials, as well as to their efforts in strengthening awareness towards the value of historical heritage. Kuwait's stall for the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, organized by a group of young nationals, was inaugurated by the Kuwaiti Ambassador at the Venice Biennale on Friday. The activity is funded by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL). The 14th International Architecture Exhibition, entitled Fundamentals, is due June 7-November 23. Some 65 national participants are exhibiting their own unique stalls at the Venice Biennale's historic pavilions of the Giardini and the Arsenale, and throughout the city of Venice.
