Late football matches on TV? Omani fans say no problem

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Just four more days to go for the football World Cup and the atmosphere is thick with excitement. The big football fans that they are, Omanis are prepared to catch every bit of action beamed from the stadiums in Brazil, even if it means sleepless nights. Some World Cup matches are scheduled to be aired 11pm, 12 midnight and 2am Oman time.

''Thursday will be a big day for my entire family. Some matches will be aired late in the night and I don't mind staying up for them. My children too will be on a summer break from school. I have bought a new big-screen television because like many others, I don't like catching up on the action at cafés. I like to be with my family and consider such events as family events,'' Naser Khamis, a government employee, said.

Others like Anwar al Balushi say it is more fun to watch matches in groups at cafés. ''The experience is energising, exciting and electrifying. It's more fun to cheer for your favourite team in a group.

''The bigger the crowd, the better it becomes. It doesn't matter what time the matches will be aired, because this treat for football lovers takes place only once in four years,'' Balushi said.

Cafés say they are  prepared to welcome the football crowd.

''We are almost ready to welcome our fans. We will have a giant tent with World Cup related decorations that can accommodate up to 1,800 people who will watch the matches on our large LCD screen that measures around 6mx4m. This is in addition to the side screens around the tent,'' Nirosh Pai, manger of Al Makan Café in Seeb, said.

Sasi Kumar, assistant operations manager at  Kargeen Caffe in Madinat as Sultan Qaboos said, ''The World Cup corner will have a football theme and will accommodate up to 400 people who will enjoy the matches on 3mx3m LCD screens.

''Serving staff too will have football themed uniforms. This is in addition to a special World Cup menu.''

TV technicians too are doing good business. ''Because of the World Cup, orders are pouring in for fixing dish antennae and special receivers. I work on at least ten orders a day now. The World Cup has made for good business,'' K Mohammad, a  techni
