(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The department of public works and service in ras al khaimah has stopped transporting staff workers on the cargo beds of its trucks.

the move is in response to a picture of some asian workers being transported on a truck of the department. the photo was posted on the department’s instagram account (saned_pwsd) by emirati resident saeed al badri.

unlike the passenger compartments the open pickup area is designed to carry only cargo not people and it does not provide protection in a crash according to ahmed al hammadi director of the department. an internal circular has been issued to all sections of the department prohibiting transportation of workers on pick-ups under any circumstances.

“workers can be easily ejected from cargo areas at a relatively low speed as a result of a sharp turn to avoid an obstacle or crash.”

besides the reported hazards of riding unrestrained in cargo areas these are not a convenient or even humane way of transporting people and the practice distorts the civilised image of the city he added.

al hammadi said the department has already provided 12 big buses and eight minibuses to transport staff cleaners and public workers. “the department shall provide more buses if needed for a more convenient human and civilised shuttle service for staff workers.”

some workers were seriously injured and even killed while transported this way al hammadi said. he warned that stiff penalties would be imposed on violators particularly drivers. “a hefty fine equivalent to one full month’s salary shall be deducted from the erring staff.”

he urged the public to post pictures of any fault or dysfunction they come across on the roads signals lamp posts signboards water supply pipes or other public services on the department’s instagram account — saned_pwsd.

corniche footpath completed

meanwhile the department has finished the construction of the footpath along the rams city corniche that overlooks the arabian gulf. “the 500m-long footpath has been provided with lights” al hammadi said noting that surveillance cameras would be installed across the qawasim corniche by the end of the year.

“the cameras are meant to keep the corniche clean spot the violators who recklessly pollute the area dump or leave wastes behind and slap them with a fine of dh500.”
