Sonakshi Sinha is back with another masala entertainer

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Boxing beauty takes on new role.

sonakshi sinha her foray into bollywood with dabangg (2010) and became the kind of heroine the mass audience could instantly connect with. she was considered a lucky mascot when her films like rowdy rathore (2012) son of sardaar (2012) omg (2012) became huge blockbusters. she was being called bollywood’s ‘it’ girl but in the pursuit of doing typical masala entertaining films she missed out on meatier roles that her contemporaries like deepika padukone anushka sharma and priyanka chopra were experimenting with. 2013 was not a great year for sonakshi with her films like lootera once upon a time in mumbai dobara boss bullett raja r..rajkumar becoming box office disasters.

sonakshi spoke to city times about new found love for fitness her tamil film with rajinikanth new tattoo and much more as her latest pairing with akshay kumar holiday: a soldier is never off duty releases today .

why were you drawn towards this film?

this character was the closest to me personality wise because i play a college girl who does a lot of sports including boxing. i used to play lot of sports in school and college. it was quite fun for me especially in a serious film like holiday. the lighter moments in this film come within the love story between akshay and my character.

did you learn boxing for the film?

i tried boxing while shooting the film and i enjoyed it so much that now i have added it to my workout regime. i box regularly.

you are majorly into fitness these days. how is it going?

yeah i am totally into fitness nowadays. it is keeping me very aware of my body. i like being fit and i think i have been working very hard. i am enjoying it and that is what is keeping me going. it is making me stick to it as well because i love every minute of it.

despite the media constantly talking about your weight your fans seems to have totally accepted your more voluptuous figure...

i think the connect that worked in my favour was that the audience felt that this girl is like one of us. i am not trying to be anybody else or conform to a certain standard that people have set of how a heroine should look like in the industry. i have broken out of that mould and i think that’s what people appreciate about me. i have never been apologetic about being myself at any given time. even when i was slightly heavier i was happy with that. i was doing the kind of films i wanted to do and people loved and appreciated me in that. now when i have decided to turn to fitness and started changing in certain ways but still not conforming to size zero or anything like that i think people have appreciated that as well. i have a basic connect with the audience that goes beyond my size.

looking at your filmography other than lootera you seem to prefer sticking to the safe zone by doing masala films.

i enjoy both kind of movies equally. i would not want to do anything that i will not enjoy. right now i want to maintain a balance between the two. i love doing a masala commercial entertainer film because as an audience member i love to watch them as well. when it comes to doing a different kind of film like lootera when it was offered to me i felt that the role was written for me. i felt very strongly about it. having said that honestly speaking i did not put more effort in lootera than i did in rowdy rathore. for me all my films are equal and i enjoy doing each one of them because i do not differentiate.

do you miss working on different kinds of scripts that your contemporaries are enjoying?

no no. i don’t. i am in my fourth year in this industry. there is a lot of time left for me to do different kind of cinema.

is it easier doing comedy with akshay kumar because of his comic timing?

akshay makes doing comedy so much easier because he himself is so good at comedies. his comic timings is excellent. in fact most of my comic timing i have learnt from akshay. he is so fantastic and makes it so much easier for a co-star to improvise and do our own thing.

how does it feel to make a debut in tamil film industry with rajinikanth?

it feels so great to work with rajinikanth because he is such a good co-star and a very humble man. honestly it has been a great honour working with him and he is so professional and nice to everyone on the sets. it is a new experience a new language and a new industry. i think this is the best debut i could have got in the tamil film industry.

are you a social person? do you have any 3am friends?

i am not really a 3am kind of a person so i generally wouldn’t call anyone at that time. but anyone that i have worked with i share a great rapport with. i know i can pick up my phone and call them any time for anything and they will always be there for me. luckily i got along with everyone at work right from the beginning of my career. that’s the good part about me because i am fuss free.

you got yourself a tattoo on your birthday. how does it feel?

i have always wanted it for a long time but my mother never really gave me permission. this time since my birthday was close i told her i really wanted a tattoo. she could not help but agree. i am very happy and my mother loves it too.
