the first-ever football five’s world championships (f5wc) shall culminate with the finals here next weekend in a tournament being hailed as a garage street and urban celebration of amateur football on a global scale.

this inaugural event will see 32 talented teams from across the planet do battle over two days of competitive action to determine the champions having come through tough regional heats and qualifiers in their respective continents.

participants won’t need much more encouragement to prosper and prevail with a cluster of european club scouts in attendance while competition organisers have sensibly scheduled the matches for the morning (10am-1pm) and afternoon (2pm-6pm/7pm) to avoid any possible clash with the fifa world cup.

“amateur football is the most-participated component of world football and the biggest format played around the world is five-a-side” said f5wc director james davies-yandle.

“we thought why not stage a world championship event that doesn’t exist and have everybody competing to represent their country? it’s a massive opportunity.

“the real winning aspect of all of this is to be the inaugural champions. we will have additional prizes but the underlying part of it is actually to win the first-ever football five’s world championships.

“we will have major scouts here as well so they could potentially win a contract or a trial or something like that. we’ve got scouts from manchester united manchester city chelsea wigan athletic juventus and ac milan and we’re just waiting on a couple more confirmations. we have at least half a dozen scouts that are going to be here.”

f5wc representative michel salgado the former real madrid and spain right-back added: “professional footballers get the attention that they deserve and that — of course — is only right.

“but what f5wc is doing is giving the chance for young people to get some of the attention that they deserve as well because — without them and all of the supporters in the world — professional football wouldn’t get the level of attention it does from everybody and wouldn’t be that huge.

“i hope that players that you will see are going to be amazing. they’ve been playing for a long time and they’re from everywhere in the world so we’re expecting big finals with great players. it’s going to be an exciting moment for everybody.

“this in an amazing event and tournament i’ll be keeping an eye on it and hopefully it will be here to stay for many years to come.”
