the advancing years and ascending yardage of spain’s players collectively at this summer’s world cup could spell the end of their era of domination according to michel salgado.
the spanish enter the fray as the reigning champions and two-time european championship winners with a 23-man squad containing many numerous lynchpin players that have proven pivotal in those three tournament triumphs since 2008.
however they’ve naturally grown older together as a consequence and salgado hopes such great servants for the national team — and international football — do themselves justice before progressively bowing out to fresh young faces and new blood.
“this world cup is tricky for european teams” salgado said. “no european team has ever won a world cup in south america although — of course — there is always a first time and hopefully it will be this one. but all of the pressure is on spain. everybody wants to beat us right now. my favourite teams for the world cup are brazil and argentina and — in terms of the european sides — germany and spain.
“with spain the problem is the key players are getting on overall and it’s not only their ages but the amount of games they’ve been playing for the last six or seven years.
“they’re going to play that football that we’ve enjoyed for so many years as well with this coach (vicente del bosque) and these players. whether we win it or not let’s hope that we at least have a great world cup because these players need a big farewell from football.” salgado added: “what they’ve done is unbelievable and historically significant for my country. it’s a generation that we’ll always remember.”
