S. Korean Army will Hold First Joint War Exercise in US


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul june 05 (qna) - the south korean army said thursday it plans to hold its first joint war exercise with the united states in the us mainland next week involving some 170 south korean soldiers.

the joint drill is part of the two allies' efforts to improve their joint combat interoperability.

the upcoming drill will run from monday to july 1 in the national training center (ntc) in fort irwin california according to the army.

it is the allies' first joint drill to be conducted in mainland us. their previous war exercises took place mostly on the korean peninsula.

one south korean mechanized infantry company and one special forces unit involving some 170 south korean soldiers will join the exercise aimed at enhancing the south korean and us militaries' ability to perform joint war missions (yonhap) news agency quoted military officials as saying.

for the first two weeks of the war exercise participating soldiers will be trained in reconnaissance and combat firing and the third and fourth weeks will be focused on joint attack and defense drills based on small military units as well as a review of the total four-week war game the officials said.

the ntc encompassing some 2400 square kilometers of isolated lands in california is a key us military training center equipped with maneuver facilities ranges and airspace restricted to military use.

"the coming war exercise is expected to help (our military) attain combined small-unit combat skills and review (the allies') ability to perform joint missions bringing the joint operation capabilities one step further" an army official said.

seoul and washington conduct several annual military drills on and around the peninsula often drawing the ire of north korea which accuses the allies of conducting war rehearsals on pyongyang. (qna)
