Kuwait- PRB meets on status of Kuwaiti detainees at Gitmo

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Periodic Review Boards (PRB) on Wednesday started discussing whether the two Kuwaiti detainees, held in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp - Fawzi Al-Awdeh and Fayez Al-Kandari - are safe to release and transfer. The first review, held here today, dealt with Al-Awdeh's case while the second, scheduled for Thursday, June 12, will deal with Al-Kandari's, Kuwait Ambassador to the United States Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah told KUNA. "These reviews constitute an important step in Kuwait's efforts to bring the Kuwaiti Gitmo detainees back home," he said after attending today's review along with representative of the Kuwaiti Public Prosecution Fahad Hamad Al-Atiqi. Sheikh Salem voiced hope that the efforts of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Foreign Ministry will culminate in the release of the two detainees, noting that this issue is a top priority for the Kuwaiti leadership and Kuwait embassy here. "During his successful visit to Washington in early September, 2013, His Highness the Amir raised this issue at his talks with US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, thus helping speed up the holding of these reviews for the Kuwaiti detainees," he went on. These reviews, authorized by the Periodic Review Secretariat under the Executive Order 13567 of March 7, 2011, are a type of trial for the detainees where the PRB hears testimonies of the detainees and the defense lawyers, Sheikh Salem added.
