US welcome Iran's "first step", cooperation with IAEA

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Joseph Macmanus welcomed, for the first time, Wednesday Iran's "first step" regarding cooperation and exchanging information with IAEA on the possibilities of military prospects to Iran's nuclear program. Addressing IAEA member states, in a session, Macmanus highlighted that Iran's engagement was "long overdue," and urged for boosting cooperation even more. "It is only a first step," he said of Iran's compliance with recent agreements, urging "accelerated progress" and "full cooperation" on other issues, including the scaling-down of uranium enrichment and sharing of information on weapons-related issues. The US diplomat also welcomed IAEA declaration on Iran engaging in additional five precautionary steps that would pave the way for similar steps in the future. "You can't see steps taking place and say it's not sufficient, those are good steps," Macmanus said. Talks between Iran and world powers are aiming for a potentially historic nuclear deal by July 20th , a deadline that commentators have increasingly said will not be reached. Macmanus however insisted that the parties were sticking to their ambitious goal. "That's what we're still focused on," he said. The US ambassador also praised IAEA member countries for their financial contributions to IAEA joint work plan with Iran. Last month, Kuwait provided a financial donation to IAEA, totaling EURO 250,000 to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) amid efforts to help support its activities, precisely for monitoring and verifying Iran's nuclear activities. The next round is planned for June 16-20 in Vienna.
