(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad won 88.7 percent of votes in the presidential elections held yesterday, the People's Assembly Speaker Mohammad Jihad Allaham announced Wednesday.
President Al-Assad will start a third term in office in early July after taking oath of office in front of the People Assembly (parliament) later this month, Allaham told reporters in Damascus this evening. Earlier today Chairman of the Higher Judicial Committee (HJCE) for Elections Justice Hisham Al-Shaar said the vote counting has completed and the electoral process went smoothly without any problems.
"The Committee received no reports on irregularities or violations so far," he affirmed.
Later on the Constitutional Court said the turnover in the polls hit 73.42 percent with 11,634,412 , out of the 15,845,545 eligible voters, casting their ballots.
A statement, read by spokesman of the Court and aired by the state-run TV, put the number of invalid ballots at 442,108.
