Van Rompuy: Ukraine will top G7 agenda

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) European Council President Herman Van Rompuy Tuesday said he looks forward to welcoming G7 leaders in Brussels on 4-5 June with Ukraine high on the agenda. "Ukraine will top the agenda. It will be an important moment to take stock of the latest developments in and around Ukraine and to continue to work together to meet this and other challenges of our times," he said in a statement. On his part, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said "this will be a special summit, firstly because it will take place in a G7 format, secondly because we will in particular address the situation in Ukraine and finally because the summit will for the first time take place in Brussels. "Recent events have once again demonstrated the importance of close cooperation between like-minded partners that share the values of freedom and democracy. We expect this summit to contribute decisively to promote these values and to reinforce a rules-based international community," he added.
