Brazil eyes Oman as gateway to trade expansion in MENA

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Brazil is eyeing Oman as a gateway to trade expansion in the MENA region, according to Michel Temer, vice president of Brazil.

Temer was speaking at the two-day Oman-Brazil Economic Forum, organised by Ithraa in Sao Paulo recently. The forum, which was held to attract Brazilian investment in Oman, focused primarily on five sectors: logistics, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, aquaculture, as well as agriculture and food processing.

According to Faris Nasser al Farsi, director general of investment promotion, Ithraa, this forum was the first of its kind event to be held in Brazil and it opened new avenues of opportunities for both nations. He said there are several deals in the pipeline but nothing is final. Among them is the establishment of a hub at the Sohar Free Zone to import fruits, vegetables and livestock.

''Talks on importing and exporting processed livestock, were also held. We don't import livestock from Brazil at the moment and there is a huge demand for it in Oman and in the region,'' he said.

In the logistics sector, Brazil is exploring opportunities in Duqm. ''Brazil is home to some of the world's leading maritime transport and logistics companies. Discussions are underway for further ties,'' Farsi said.

The forum also discussed opportunities in the mining industry. ''Brazil's expertise in mining can be used by Oman in the Duqm belt. We will adopt the cluster approach which will help promote the industry. Minerals can be extracted and exported,'' Farsi said.

Investments for the Port of Salalah also came up for discussion at the forum.  ''The port has the necessary infrastructure, and the governorate provides easy access to East Africa, which can help in feeder line expansion.

''In the pharmaceutical sector too, there are many possibilities of tie-ups as Brazil specialises in research and development,'' he added.

A Brazilian delegation is expected to visit Oman in September following the success of this fo
