S. Korea US Discuss Conditions of Resuming SixParty Talks

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Shington june 03 (qna) - the top envoys of south korea and the united states met in washington on monday to discuss the conditions needed to revive the negotiations that have been stalled for five and a half years.

seoul's top nuclear negotiator hwang joon-kook and his american counterpart glyn davies agreed the stalled talks would resume only if the dialogue could curb north korea from advancing its nuclear capabilities according to korea's (kbs world) website.

emerging from four hours of discussions hwang said the two sides shared the position that the six-way talks should be a meaningful dialogue to achieve substantial progress in denuclearizing north korea.

the two nations plan to closely consult with china on the conditions to resume the six-way talks.

hwang and davies also discussed north korea's agreement to reinvestigate the abductions of japanese citizens by pyongyang in return to have some of its sanctions lifted by japan.

as japan is set to establish a separate channel for talks with north korea seoul and washington are expected to ask japan to keep pace with other partners.

hwang said the envoys agreed to continue close consultations with the understanding that south korea the u.s. and japan should maintain close and transparent coordination on the north's nuclear program.

seoul and washington reaffirmed that they will impose strong sanctions against pyongyang with cooperation from the international community if it launches a fourth nuclear test. (qna)
