(MENAFN- The Peninsula) World-class speakers including Luis Silva, COO of Maracana Stadium, the venue of the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup final and Rod Nenner, Vice-President of the Washington's Redskins are delivering sessions on all aspects of modern venue operations and stadium management to a select audience in Qatar.
The inaugural day of the two-day Josoor Institute course was held at the Aspire Academy yesterday.
Josoor Institute, a centre of excellence for the sports and events industries, is conducting the course titled 'An Introduction to Venue and Stadium Management'.
Case studies of stadia from across the globe and in the Middle East are being used to demonstrate best practice.
The first day of the course had topics such as the state of play of stadia and venues in the Middle East, guiding principles of facility management and environmental sustainability options for modern stadia.
The second day of the course today will include a key note session delivered by Silva highlighting the lessons from Rio on preparing a venue for a mega event among others.
Speaking on his participation, Silva praised Josoor Institute, "I am delighted to be invited to share my experience of building a world-class sports stadium with the delegates from Qatar, the Middle East and North Africa.
The delegates were keen to hear and learn from the experiences in Brazil.
Qatar has begun its journey towards hosting a successful 2022 FIFA World Cup and many of the other events that will happen before such as the upcoming Qatar 2015 24th Men's Handball World Championship.
The course is hosting key local and international experts who are providing insights on strategies and operations of stadia and events.
These speakers bring over 125 years of experience and include Feras Btaddini, Head of Aspire Dome; Malcolm Tarbitt, Director Security and Risk Advisory at ICSS; Rainer Schuler, General Manager, FGB Arena; Andy Young, Senior Consultant, Wembley Consulting and Iain Barnett, Vice President, Stadium Division, IMG.
Addressing the gathering in the opening session, Mushtaq Al-Waeli, advisor to the Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy on Josoor Institute said:
"Our goal at the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy is to help build sustainable sports industry in Qatar and across the region," he remarked.
Delegates in attendance at the course included representatives from local, regional and international organsiations including the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Qatar Stars League, Qatar Football Association, Qatar Foundation, Aspire Logistics, Qatar Handball Association, Lekhwiya Club, Qatar Sporting Club, Al Saad Club, Umm Salal FC, Al Arabi Sports Club, Al Rayyan Club, Khalifa Stadium, West End Park Cricket and regional football associations of Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen.
Alaa Abdel Qader, a member of the International Handball Federation, representing the Qatar Handball Association commented:
