(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul june 01 (qna) - south korea's chief negotiator to the six-way talks aimed at ending north korea's nuclear program left for washington sunday for discussions with his american counterpart on the resumption of the long-stalled negotiations and other issues seoul's foreign ministry said.
hwang joon-kook special representative for korean peninsula peace and security affairs is slated to hold a meeting monday with glyn davies the u.s. special representative for north korea policy south korean news agency (yonhap) reported the ministry as saying.
the two are expected to discuss ways to reopen the six-party talks assess the current security situation on the peninsula and address a recent agreement between north korea and japan.
"the discussion will be focused on evaluating the coordination over north korea's denuclearization and the future course of handling pyongyang' nuclear programs " hwang told yonhap news agency by phone before leaving the country.
the six-nation talks involving the two koreas the u.s. china japan and russia have been stalled since late 2008.
the ministry said hwang and davies will also exchange views on boosting cooperation among seoul washington and tokyo in their policy toward pyongyang.
last week north korea and japan reached a deal over the issue of japanese nationals abducted by pyongyang decades ago. tokyo said it will lift part of its sanctions on pyongyang and give humanitarian aid to the reclusive country.
the ministry further said that seoul and washington will adjust the north korean policy especially ahead of chinese president xi jinping's visit to south korea later this month when xi is scheduled to hold a summit with south korean president park geun-hye. (qna)
