Militants kidnap assembly member in E. Pakistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A member of the provincial assembly (MPA), Rana Jamil Hasan, was abducted on Saturday from an area in the eastern Punjab province of Pakistan, said officials. A senior police official, Yaqoob Hussain, confirmed the kidnapping of the MPA associated with the ruling political party of the country, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N). The member of the assembly was kidnapped from an area near Pindi Bhattian in Punjab, said police. Police has launched an investigation into the abduction of Hasan who was elected to the Punjab Assembly from PP-174. According to his brother, Rana Wakeel Hassan, MPA Rana Jamil -- along with his wife -- was away to attend the funeral of a close relative and was on his way back to the city of Islamabad when unidentified armed kidnappers took them away near the Sial roundabout at Pindi Bhattian Interchange. The kidnappers blindfolded the couple and took them away to an undisclosed location, however, they freed Rana Jamilآ's wife in Rawalpindi city with a message to arrange USD 0.5 million ransom amount, said Rana Wakeel. Chief Minister of Punjab province, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, took notice of the incident and sought an immediate report on it. He instructed the police chief of Punjab to undertake all the possible steps for his release.
