stunned and shocked onlookers watched as a 24-year-old nigerian woman removed her clothes and walked naked around al wahda street opposite sharjah city centre recently.

as passersby shopkeepers and motorists watched the mayhem one shopkeeper tried to convince her to wear her clothes before the police arrived but in vain.

according to eyewitnesses the woman visited an outlet and enquired about the price of some clothes. all of a sudden she started shouting rushed out onto the street and started removing her clothes. the behaviour shocked onlookers and the police were informed.

one shopkeeper told khaleej times that the man who tried to convince her to wear clothes took her to his shop to make her wear them but the woman seemed very strong and resisted him. female police soon arrived and handled the situation sensitively. they convinced her to wear her clothes and took her with them. eyewitness all nearby shopkeepers said the woman could be suffering from mental disability.

mohammed al wasiq a lawyer at sharjah court said the woman could be charged with breaching public modesty and violating decency law in sharjah that is if she is in good mental condition. the law stipulates that women should not wear clothing that exposes the stomach and back short skirts above the knee and tight and transparent clothing that reveals the body. swimmers are prohibited from wearing bathing costumes in public places.

speaking to khaleej times lt-col yousif bin harmool director of al buheirah police station said the incident happened recently and the police dealt with it professionally. as soon as the police received the complaint female police officials were dispatched and they handled the situation efficiently.

during interrogation the woman appeared to be mentally fit and initially denied her act. she then refused to disclose the reason for her behaviour. the woman was referred to the public prosecution on charges of violating public decency and breaching modesty law.

according to the public prosecution the woman was initially sentenced to six months in jail followed by deportation. she however appealed and the verdict was reduced to one month in jail followed by deportation.

lt-col yousif said such kind of behaviour is against the culture and tradition of the country and islamic teachings and that such acts are offensive to muslims as well as non-muslims.
