maleficent

angelina jolie steps in front of the camera for the first time in four years to star in a live action reimagining of disney’s 1959 animated film sleeping beauty.

the a-lister/supermum/humanitarian portrays the title character in maleficent. the 180 million disney venture explains how she became the infamously scheming villainess who places a curse on young princess aurora (played by elle fanning as well as jolie’s daughter vivienne in a younger incarnation).

the fantasy film is directed by debutant robert stromberg who has previously won two academy awards for best production design for avatar and alice in wonderland. also starring in the film are sharlto copley sam rileu imelda staunton and juno temple.

reviews are yet to come through for the movie.

linda woolverton who wrote maleficent’s screenplay is a disney veteran – having penned beauty and the beast and co-written the lion king and homeward bound: the incredible journey. she is also the only ever female to have a sole screenwriter’s credit for a billion-dollar film having provided the script for tim burton’s alice in wonderland.

a million ways to die in the west

after enjoying a global smash with his debut feature film ted – which pulled in a staggering 550 million at the box office – seth macfarlane returns with a western comedy for his sophomore effort.

as well as directing a million ways to die in the west the multi-talented entertainer also stars in the flick he co-wrote with longtime family guy collaborators alec sulkin and wellesley wild.

macfarlane plays cowardly arizona sheep farmer albert stark whose reputation takes a battering after he pulls out of a duel. but albert is handed a chance at redemption when his new love anna’s (charlize theron) outlaw ex-boyfriend clinch (liam neeson) comes to town looking for revenge against his rival.

the film features a slew of famous names in supporting roles – among them neil patrick harris sarah silverman amanda seyfried giovanni ribisi and ewan mcgregor.

robin williams portrays a misanthrope who discovers he has only 90 minutes to live in this comedy-drama.

when dr. sharon gill (mila kunis) tells her curmudgeonly patient henry altmann that he has a brain aneurysm which will kill him imminently henry decides to find everyone he has wronged in his life to make amends.

critics have dismissed the film as predictable and lacking in depth.

“hampered by heavy-handed direction and an unbelievable script” said christine n. ziemba of paste magazine.

“[williams] has played against type before but his presence feels like epic miscasting in this underwritten dramedy” said sara stewart of the new york post.

the angriest man in brooklyn currently has a 14% rating on rottentomatoes.com and a 6.1/10 rating on imdb.com.

this is director phil alden robinson’s first film since 2002’s the sum of all fears. robinson the vice president of the academy of motion picture arts and sciences has also helmed movies like field of dreams and sneakers.
