(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) A high-profile delegation from the uae?s ministries of presidential affairs and economy as well as food control authorities concluded a visit to the swiss capital bern where it held collaborative talks with counterparts in the swiss government on food security and sustainability.
the discussion agenda examined solutions for securing a sustained national food supply as well as the best practices in food storage and the role of the private sector in strengthening the food supply chain. the uae delegation also explored ways in which the swiss expertise could be effectively leveraged to benefit the uae and eliminate its food issues.
the visit came as part of an on-going partnership between the uae and switzerland to identify opportunities in food serity which has remained a key concern for the gcc with imported food accounting for 80-90 per cent of all food consumed.
the delegation was led by juma mohammed al kait assistant undersecretary for foreign trade affairs at the uae ministry of economy.
al kait said: “with the uae importing about 80 to 90 per cent of its food the issue of food security continues to be a top priority for the uae government. this challenge will become more complex as world population climbs steadily and food demand increases by more than 50 per cent in the next 20 years.”
he added: “the uae is working hard on all fronts to maximise its own food independence by investing in the right knowledge technology and practices.”
