the philippine consulate general in dubai is encouraging members of the filipino community in dubai and northern emirates to support vigan after it qualified as one of the top 28 finalists for the new 7 wonders–cities of the world in december 2014.

the consulate is asking people to support vigan and ensure the city’s inclusion in the top 21 in july top 14 by october and finally to be included in the new 7 wonders–cities of the world by december this year.

vice-consul geronimo suliguin said that to get their votes counted all filipino expatriates and their families should visit www.n7w.com/en/cities and cast their votes.

“let us together show our solidarity like we did for puerto princesa underground river one of new 7 wonders of nature in 2012. let us advance the cause to have vigan included in the prestigious roster” suliguin said.

currently vigan is recognised by unesco for best practice in world heritage site management. in choosing it unesco said that “vigan is an exceptionally intact and well-preserved example of a european trading town in east and southeast asia. the architecture is truly reflective of its roots in both materials and design in its fusion of asian building design and construction with european colonial architecture and planning.”

located 404km by road from manila vigan can be reached by land in eight to nine hours. by air daily one-hour domestic flights are available from manila to laoag city in ilocos norte which is a one-and-a-half hour drive by bus or arranged vehicles to vigan.

established in the 16th century vigan was the capital of spanish conqueror juan de salcedo’s ilocos but also was a trading centre with direct trading relations with china. the europeans sought silk and porcelain and so the city became part of the 250-galleon (ships) trade that linked asia to europe and the new world. vigan has 187 documented examples of period architecture that give visitors a feeling that they have shifted 500 years back in time. ancient churches also abound in every town older than the missions of california.
