Funn concludes three training workshops for children and young people

(MENAFNEditorial) FUNN – a Sharjah-based foundation dedicated to promoting media arts for children and youth in the UAE – has successfully concluded three training workshops on anime character design, iphonography and holograms at its headquarters in Sharjah. The first workshop, titled "Anime Character Design", targeted children and young people aged 10 -14 and was aimed at teaching participants how to create their favourite anime characters from different angles. The workshop was presented by graphic designer and illustrator Joumana Ismail. During the three-day event, participants were provided with different character pictures and were given the chance to choose their favourite ones to come up with poses suited to their characters. Spanning 12 hours in total, the workshop offered participants the opportunity to nurture their talent and sharpen their drawing skills – after studying and comparing human facial expressions, the expressions and personalities of their anime characters started to manifest. The second workshop, a mobile photography event titled "iPhonography", was presented by photographer Ammar Al Attar. Participants aged 14 -18 engaged in hands on training on how to use smart phone photography techniques, and learned which apps are most suited for shooting, post processing and sharing. Participants were also shown how to capture and share images through social media, and how to make their images stand out from the crowd. FUNN's third workshop on holograms took place under the title "Extension of your face – who am I?" and was presented by interior designer and contemporary artist Ali Mrad. The two-day workshop saw the participation of children and young people aged 10 -18, who were trained in the use of their imagination. They were shown, specifically, how to develop their skills in hand crafts as well as how to use any materials around them in a positive manner while generating new ideas. The attendees were given the opportunity to take pictures of one another in different poses – front, back and side – to create a 3D image on a glass pyramid. They were then engaged in printing the portraits and tracing them on transparent paper with permanent markers. Students were then asked to think of an object that represents them, and to add it as an extension of their faces, after which they were trained on how to scan the drawings and convert the outlines to white on a black background using Photoshop. Speaking on the importance of conducting workshops on media arts, Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, Manager of Funn, said the workshops are in line with the foundation's drive to offer an interactive and innovative space for children and young people to enable them to unlock their talent and sharpen their media and art skills. "We strive to help our young people to develop their potential talents with the aim of creating a new generation of creative artists and professionals in various forms of media arts and visual media, so as to further boost Sharjah's internationally recognized position as a cultural and art hub in the region and world, a fact that has been clearly manifested in crowning Sharjah as the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014," she added. The organization's Manager underlined the approach embraced by the emirate of Sharjah to become a beacon of culture and arts not only in the Arab region, but also on the global stage, in line with the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
