Egyptian FM Meets His Iranian Counterpart on Sidelines of NAM Conference


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Giers may 29 (qna) - egyptian foreign minister nabil fahmy met his iranian counterpart mohamed jawad zarif whose country currently chairs the non-aligned movement (nam) session.



the egyptian foreign ministry spokesman ambassador badr abdul atti said the meeting of the two ministers the first of its kind and which comes on the sidelines of the nam ministerial conference here dealt with the syrian crisis'latest developments and means of reaching a political solution to stem the bloodshed there and realize the aspirations of the syrian people to build a democratic state.



the two ministers also reviewed the latest updates of the palestinian issue and the middle east peace process and efforts to revive the peace negotiations between the palestinians and the israelis.

the issues of international peace and development peaceful use of nuclear energy and un reforms featured prominently in the discussions of the 17th ministerial conference of the non-aligned movement (nam).



the conferees including 60 foreign ministers and representatives of several international organizations stressed the need to join forces in addressing the main issues of concern notably the development and security.

un secretary-general ban ki-moon commended in a speech via a video link the role of nam in resolving the conflicts in the developing world and alleviating poverty in the least-developing countries.



he said since its inception the movement has been defending the universal principles of respect for human rights justice and equality among all nations of the world. ban expressed hope that the movement will continue addressing the global challenges.(qna)
