(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul may 29 (qna) - south korean defense ministry said it is unaware of a reported u.s. plan to deploy its advanced missile defense system in south korea.
south korean defense ministry spokesman kim min-seok said thursday that no discussions had been made between seoul and washington about the us terminal high-altitude area defense (thaad) system in question (kbs world) reported.
kim added it was impossible in structural terms for south korea’s own defense system to be incorporated into the us thaad.
he said seoul is in the process of purchasing pac-3 missiles to upgrade the current pac-2 to shoot down low-flying missiles in their terminal phase.
he added the south has been developing instead long-range surface-to-air missiles (l-sam) in an effort to better counter missiles at a higher altitude.
the wall street journal reported wednesday that the us had already carried out a site survey in south korea for possible locations for a terminal high-altitude area defense (thaad) battery. (qna)
