Qatar- Pietersen visits cricket stadium in Doha

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Former England captain and batsman Kevin Pietersen yesterday visited West End Park Stadium, Doha's brand new cricket stadium. Pietersen, who lost his cricket contract with England Cricket Board (ECB) earlier this year following a disastrous Ashes tour to Australia, has planned cricket academies in the UAE and India. Qatar may well turn up to be the next stop for the Delhi Daredevils captain if his short visit to Doha yesterday is any indication. Pietersen, who played 104 Test Matches, 136 One-day Internationals and 37 Twenty20 Internationals for England in an almost 10-year career, visited the cricket stadium in Industrial Area during his brief visit to the country. "Completely done after a busy day...a flying visit into Doha. Back in #mydubai!," he tweeted. Yet another post on the miocro blogginig site read: "Brilliant and incredibly exciting afternoon spent in #Doha with all the @kpca24 crew! Deserves a #BOOM!" The star cricketer was taken on a guided tour of the West End Park Stadium and briefed about the facilities at the 13,000-capacity venue. Present on the tour were Chairman of West End Park Mana Ibrahim Al Mana and other officials. "Pietersen came to Doha at the invitation of Chairman of West End Park Mana Ibrahim Al Mana and he was impressed by what he saw in Qatar," Michael Scallon, Head of Sport at Al Mana group of companies, said. The stadium official said talks between Al Mana and Pietersen focused on how the two could work together in promoting the game in Qatar. Pietersen's Dubai academy will start from October this year, according to the website http://www.kpcricketacademy.com/. Qatar hosted its first international match in January this year with West End Park Stadium the venue for the triangular One-day and Twenty-20 tournaments involving Pakistan, Ireland and South Africa women teams.
