(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani was re-elected chairman of the Qatar Chamber by its newly installed board members yesterday.

This is the third time Sheikh Khalifa has been re-elected to the post, while this was the fifth election to the Chamber's board after the 1990 law was passed setting it up.

There were no changes in the board this time as well as the same people that were on it earlier made it to the coveted panel again.

Mohamed bin Ahmed Tawar Al Kawari was again picked up as vice-chairman of the Chamber after an uneventful election.

The Chamber's board has 17 members, and 16 of them were decided through consensus earlier. The members are elected from different business sectors.

The sectors include trading, industry, insurance, banking, tourism, agriculture and services.

The only committee for which the poll was held yesterday was the services panel. The sitting member of the board representing this committee, Ali Abdul Latif Al Missned, was re-elected.

This year's election to the Chamber's board, coming every four years as it does, was devoid of any spectacle except that two candidates in the fray for the services committee's lone membership to challenge Ali Al Missned, refused to withdraw their nomination in his favour and insisted that the poll be held.

These nominees were Abdul Rahman Al Najjar and Suhaila Rabia Al Hareb. The poll could not be held as scheduled earlier due to a lack of quorum and was rescheduled for yesterday.

Voting for the services committee membership began at 3pm and ended at around 7pm, with 3,227 votes being polled. Some 129 of these votes were invalid.

The Chamber has a total of 29,219 members who were eligible to vote. This time, as the election was rescheduled, the quorum rule did not apply.

Ali Al Missned polled 2,425 votes, while Abdul Rahman Al Najjar bagged 673 votes. Suhaila drew a blank as she didn't get a single vote.

One wondered what happened to her own vote and whether it was declared invalid. She left the venue of the election, the Chamber premises, soon after the results were out. She didn't speak to reporters.

Al Najjar gave a good fight to Ali Al Missned and congratulated him on his win saying he had won through a democratic process, so he deserved praise.

The poll committee said those who were defeated in yesterday's poll have 10 days to file objections, if any, to the Minister of Economy and Commerce.
