Dozen US Fighter Jets to Arrive in S. Korea Next Month


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul may 28 (qna) - about a dozen u.s. fighter jets will arrive in south korea early next month for a four-month deployment as part of washington's efforts to demonstrate its commitment to security in the region u.s. forces korea said wednesday.

"approximately 12 f-16s from new jersey and washington d.c. air national guard units are set to deploy to kunsan air base" on june 1 the u.s. pacific air forces said in a statement.



the air base is located in the southeastern city of gunsan some 274 kilometers south of seoul.

washington has routinely deployed fighter aircraft to the region "providing pacific air forces and the u.s. pacific command a theater security package deepening ties with our allies and our relationship with the international community" it added.



as a routine and integral part of the u.s. pacific command's combat since march 2004 the movement of its fighters into the pacific region aims "to maintain a prudent deterrent against threats to regional security and stability" the air force said.

about 28500 u.s. troops are currently stationed in south korea a legacy of the 1950-53 korean war which ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty. (qna)
