Obama announces end of U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan this year


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced that the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan would end this year, but that almost 10,000 American troops would remain in the country through 2015 if the Afghan government signs a bilateral security agreement. In a statement at the White House, Obama called for more than 9,800 U.S. troops to stay in Afghanistan after the end of 2014, with the number cut roughly in half by the end of 2015.
