EU- Merkel hopes agreement can be reached on new EC President

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) German Chancellor Angela Merkel Tuesday expressed her happiness that the centre-right wing European Peoples' Party (EPP) has won in the European Parliament elections. Speaking to journalists ahead of an informal dinner of EU leaders in Brussels tonight, Merkel said "we are happy that the EPP has won and I am especially happy." Merkel said she met earlier with EPP leader, Jean-Claude Juncker, who is the top candidate for the European Commission presidency. "We are going to debate today on how we can conduct negotiations with the European Parliament. We are going to give a mandate to (European Council President Herman Van Rompuy) to do that, of course in cooperation with Jean-Claude Juncker who is going to lead negotiations on behalf of the Parliament," she said. "I hope we will reach an agreement, we know that no political group has the majority, (in the European Parliament) therefore we will have to find broader majorities and today the framework about this process will be discussed," she added.
