Oman's horse wins top prize at President of the UAE Cup race in Ireland


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The horse, Lahoub, owned by Sheikh Nasir bin Mohammed al Hashar of Oman, has been declared champion in the third round of the President of the UAE Cup for Arabian horses, in Ireland, winning the €30,000 prize. 

The cup was instituted in 1994 as part of the Classic Abu Dhabi Irish Guineas hosted at the Curragh racetrack in Ireland, a press release said. The 1,600m race was for Arabian horses aged four years and above and Lahoub was jockeyed by Mac Stanley. Lahoub won in a record time of 1.58.97 minutes.

Gazelle, owned by G Zutlev and ridden by Simms Hillfaraman was second while the third place went to Al Habab, owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum deputy ruler of Dubai, jockeyed by Jack O'Shea.

Al Habab's start from Gate 3 was delayed due to crowding by other horses, according to the release. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa al Nahyan, advisor to the UAE president and head of the Emirates Equestrian Union awarded the winners. He said the union works on preserving the distinct Arabian breed. 

Sheikh Hashar, the owner of Lahoub dedicated the win to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. He was quoted in the release as saying, ''The keenness of His Majesty the Sultan on such achievements drives us to represent Oman in international equestrian competitions.'' <
