Pakistan seeks new chapter in relations with India

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Pakistan's Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Monday said that the inauguration of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of India was a "great opportunity" for the two nuclear neighbors to open a new chapter in relations. The premier on his overnight visit to India to attend the swearing in ceremony of his Indian counterpart said his visit to India "could help turn a new page in the bilateral relations." "It is a great moment and a great opportunity," Sharif said, adding: "This is a chance to reach out to each other. Both governments have a strong mandate," according to a press release by Pakistan High Commission. Modi, the 63-year old Hindu nationalist leader, took the oath of office as India's 15th prime minister earlier today, ten days after winning by landslide the most powerful mandate for 30 years. Sharif is the first Pakistani prime minister to attend the inauguration of an Indian leader since the formation of the two countries that have fought three wars and remain divided over the disputed region of Kashmir and several other issues. The Pakistani leader, who would be holding talks on Tuesday with newly elected Indian counterpart, said that he would be happy to have Indians invest in Pakistan and offered them high returns on their investment. The premier instructed the release of 151 Indian prisoners currently detained in Pakistani jails and handing over of 57 fishing boats in Pakistan's custody as a goodwill gesture before his visit.
